Swimming is the fourth most popular sport in the United States. According to the United States Census Bureau, there are 10.4 million residential and 309,000 public swimming pools in the U.S.

Many people who live in the United States own a residential swimming pool, and millions of those pools are heated. You are lucky. 36% of kids and teens and 15% of adults swim at least half a dozen times per year.

There are many ways to maintain a swimming pool, from weekly cleaning to deep-cleaning once a year. Pool problems can be discouraging, but here's the good news: you don't have to let them ruin your game.

1. Turning Green

Green water is a sign of algae.

This usually comes after years of not cleaning properly and neglecting basic maintenance. If your pool is turning green, it’s time for deep cleaning.

Algae is common in swimming pools, and if you make sure to keep the water clean, you can keep it out. The use of certain chemicals can ward off growth. And regular cleaning is essential to keeping a clean look.

Give your swimming pool a shock! Not with a shout of "Boo!", but by adding a generous amount of
chlorine to the water. The normal pool pH level is between 7.2 and 7.6. These numbers should be used to keep your pool from being a breeding ground for algae.

After the pool has been shocked, use a pool brush to clean off all the excess algae. The filter will then do the rest of the work.

2. Filter is overused

A filter that is clogged and dirty is still a working one! This is not the worst problem.

Yes, it's one of the most common. And the solution is very simple. Clean the filter. A clogged filter in a pool isn't doing its best work.

Much like an a/c filter in your home, if it's clogged it's working much harder than the usual.

Make sure to keep your filter clean. Spray it regularly with a hose until it is clean and ready to use again.

3. Scratchy Pool Surface

If you’ve ever swum in the pool and got bloody or sore toes, it might be due to a scratchy pool surface. A scratched pool surface is no good for a swimmer's feet or their bathing suit.

The surface could be scratched up by whoever installed it in the pool. Or it might have been caused by the material they used. It's more likely to be a result of calcium buildup. This can be tested using the same pH test mentioned above.

4. Cloudy Pool Water

If you notice that your pool water seems a little cloudy, it could be for a few different reasons.

The environment that your pool is in is the first thing you should look at. Do you have your pool screened? Is it possible for it to have access to all the elements outside?

You may want to put a screen over the pool if it's open to the outdoors. This decreases the amount of work your filter has to do. And talking about the filter. Have you looked at yours recently? There is a chance that your pool's cloudy appearance is due to a clogged filter.

Your pool's chemical levels should be checked if all else fails. It's possible that you added too many chemicals to shock or clean your pool. You can use the pH tests to confirm that you haven't used too much of the chemicals.

5. Stained Pool

If your pool is already clean, but you still notice unpleasant stains, it's likely a stain has already developed. If you're unsure, it could be something else.

A stain on the pool could be due to rust from a crack in its foundation. There could be some excess metal in the pool. If you want to identify the source of your pool, inspect the interior and exterior.

6. Irritating Sensation After Swimming

Have you ever felt like your eyes, your throat or your skin was on fire? If this happens to you when you’re swimming, you’ve got a few issues to fix.

A swimming pool must be treated to prevent irritation to the eyes, skin, and more. Chlorines are the culprit behind that swimmer's irritability. They combine with the nitrogen in ammonia to produce a very irritating chemical called chloramine.

You'll want to test the pH levels of your product's bottles as well. When the pH levels are between 7.2-7.6.  It’s a good idea to stick within these limits. Anything above or below those numbers could cause redness and burning.

7. Pool Cracks

Structural cracks can be found in the pool. A crack in your foundation can lead to a lot of issues and require a lot of work.

Pick out the source of the crack. It's possible that your pool is leaking. This can be caused by improper installation or a moving foundation.

It's best to seek advice from a professional.

8. Scaling

The build-up of calcium in the pool is the reason for this. Check out the 10th section for more information on scaling.

9. Underground Pool Is Going Above-Ground

You might have a pooling problem if you notice that your pool is rising above the surface. Excess water may be pooling under the surface to shift the pool upwards.

If you want to give your pool some pressure relief, drain it downhill or open the relief valves at the bottom. The job is most likely for a professional.

10. Calcium Build-Up

You can have either calcium carbonate or calcium silicate here. There are white flaky scales in the pool. White-grey scales are caused by silicate. It's worse if it's sile.

This could mean there is a leak in the foundation of your pool. Its existence is more long-term because it takes longer to form.

It is easy to remove Carbonate. You can get the best calcium level in your pool.

The higher the number, the more calcium deposits there are. It can be removed with scrubbing, pumice stone, or calcium. The process should be simpler since the deposits are not as heavy.

You'd think pool problems are rare, but they are. When you invest in a pool, you're also putting in work.
