Sand Filter

A sand filter, as the name implies, is made up of sand particles that catch dirt and prevent it from entering your pool. Water flows freely through the sand, while anything else, such as leaves and debris, is imprisoned.

Check the pressure gauge on your sand filter to see if it's time to clean it. You should inspect it first, then clean it once the pressure reaches 8-10 psi.

This pump has a backwash function that you will use to clean it. Turn the pump off, attach the hose, and then turn the backwash setting to "backwash". Then, turn on the pump and let it run. Watch as the water flows through the pump. It will start out clean, but as detritus washes out, it will be darker.

You can switch off the pump and set the valve to "rinse," letting it run for approximately a minute until it starts to flow clear again. Afterward, switch the pump back on to its original setting and you're done.

Cartridge Filter

Cartridge filters are another common alternative. This type of filter uses a polyester cloth to trap dirt and debris while allowing water to pass through it.

You'll know it's time to clean your cartridge filter by checking the pressure gauge and seeing if it's reached 8-10 psi, just like the sand filter.

A cartridge filter does not require backwashing. Instead, simply switch off the filter, remove the cartridge, and wash it with a hose. If your filter is really filthy, you may want to spray it with a pool filter cleaning solution.

Then simply replace the cartridge in the filter and switch it back on when you're finished.

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filter

DE filters, like sand filters, send water through a mesh filter covered with diatomaceous earth powder, which traps any particles.

It's time to clean your DE filter when you see the pressure gauge rise by 8-10 psi above normal. Cleaning your DE filter also requires backwashing.

When the water is flowing through the washer, simply turn off the water flow. Once the water is flowing through as clear, replace the valve to its normal position.

The DE filter must then be removed and rinsed with a hose to remove the DE powder. After that, you can replace the filter and refill the pump with new DE powder before turning it back on.
