Why vacuum your pool?

I guess the question should be; why not? I mean, it’s like vacuuming your carpet, you know. You prevent mold as well as any form of debris that may have settled on it. Now when we talk of mold on the carpet, it is pretty much equivalent to pool algae. That aside.

Let’s take a look at the specific circumstances under which you would need to vacuum the :

  • Cleaning up after eliminating algae
  • As part of a pool maintenance schedule
  • When removing heavy or tough debris on the swimming pool floor

What you need

  • A vacuum head
  • Telescopic pole for the vacuum head
  • Vacuum hose, whose length should cover a longer distance.

All these items can be bought together as the manual vacuum system and can be found at the pool supply store in your area.

If your pool is above ground and you want to vacuum it, you can still follow these steps, skipping the ones that don’t apply. Your filter system, skimmer, and the vacuum are the most important parts in this case.

Before you begin

Ensure that your filtration system is working as it should and that it is not any signs of slowing down or malfunctioning, not forgetting to check if it is clean. Also, are you trying to vacuum your pool with a sand filter or a cartridge filter? Well, the process for doing so is quite simple as it is exactly the same one, with the only difference being that you have to ensure that you have to clean the filter. Now, without further ado, let’s look at how you can vacuum your pool;

How to vacuum a pool

Here is a step by step guide on how you can vacuum your pool manually:

  1. Take your telescopic pole and then attach it firmly to a vacuum head. Ensure that it will fit and the pole fits into place, the way they are .
  2. Then, on the vacuum head, there is a plastic outlet where you attach your hose, so you need to do that. If you find that the hose is sliding or moving around, utilize a hose clamp to make it tight.
  3. Once your telescopic pole and hose are firmly attached, then you can dip the vacuum into the swimming pool. Lower it until its head touches the floor of the pool.
  4. Before putting your vacuum into the water, remove the basket on your skimmer, as it will save you a lot of time later in the process.
  5. Now, take the hose’s free end and then press it against the return jet so as to clear the line. What this does is to fill water into the hose, pushing the lingering air out, which paves way for full suction power. When you do this, you will start seeing bubbles coming out of the vacuum’s head from the pool’s bottom.
  6. Then, cover the end of the hose using your hand to prevent the entry of air and water from flowing out.
  7. Go to your skimmer and attach the hose’s end to its suction hole. Please note: take the free end of the hose, run it through the skimmer’s opening in the pool in order to attach it to its suction hole. By doing this, you will avoid creating a pocket of air in your hose, which happens when you just pull the hose out of the pool and into the skimmer’s suction hole. If you have multiple skimmers, you just need to choose the one you want to plug. Take away the basket, and then using a tennis ball, plug the suction hole, which diverts the suction power to the skimmer attached to your hose. If it’s a vacuum plate that you are using, just put it in the skimmer and then firmly attach your hose to its outlet.
  8. Have done all that, now you can start vacuuming. So, just begin on one pool end, working your way to the other end at a slow but steady pace. Note that if you go too fast, you will just be moving the debris around. Take pool vacuuming as mowing your lawn, you see the way you push the lawnmower, that’s how you work with the pool vacuum.

(If at any point you lose suction, simply repeat steps 5-7)
